Keeping Your Car in Check

Having a car gives you a freedom that relying on public transport simply cannot. However cars can be prone to a whole range of breakdowns often just when you need them most. Understanding the warning signs of problems can give you a chance to get any potential problem sorted before they lead to a breakdown. Bear in mind that if you do not keep a check on your car it can break down just before you go to drive to that all important job interview or even to collect loved ones from the airport. Making sure you keep your car in tip-top condition is the best way to protect against untimely breakdowns.

An important thing to watch out for is your car battery. Car batteries only have a certain lifespan and will need replacing as they get older. Sometimes, however, they can stop charging properly due to other car problems such as the alternator.

A good way to check for any problems with your car battery is to listen to the sound it makes when you are starting the car. If it sounds like it is struggling to turn over it is always best to get it checked by a mechanic or car battery specialist. This may not be the battery as such but a related problem which a mechanic will be able to diagnose.

Another two areas that need constantly maintained and checked are the oil and water levels. By replacing the fluid in your car you will extend the lifetime of your engine as they require both oil and water to operate at optimum conditions.

If you are not sure about what goes on under the hood of your car you can always ask a family member of friend to check it for you. Alternatively take a beginners course to car maintenance. This will save you money in the long-run as you will be able to replace your own oil and water.
